Pickleball makes it big!

Pickleball makes it big!
To the Editor:
You may recall on Sept. 8, 2009, I walked into the office of The Scugog Standard and asked if I could speak to someone about Pickleball. In less than three minutes I was sitting at Tracey Coveart’s desk admiring her hair cut. As I talked about the game of Pickleball, she sat at her computer and typed. In less than 15 minutes, she had an article and I left smiling.

Not only did that excellent article attract 35 individuals to come out to find out about Pickleball but it caught the attention of the director of Community Living Durham North.

The week following the demonstration, she brought a group of clients and their assistants over to watch Pickleball. Several of these physically abled individuals tried the game. When they were ready to leave, the director asked me if it would be okay if a couple of the individuals came back to participate with an assistant. Since I promote Pickleball as a game for all, I said, “Sure!”

Carol and Doug and their assistant Tracey joined our group the following week and have played almost every week since. Thursday mornings are the highlight of their week. They are part of the group. They came to the district senior games to cheer us on. They will be at the Ontario Senior Games at UOIT cheering us on this Wednesday and Thursday. And they will be joining us for our Fun Day on Sept. 2, to play on one of the teams and join us for a barbecue afterwards. I have had many success stories in starting Pickleball clubs and teaching players but this has to be the one that I look on with the most satisfaction. To see these special individuals on the court laughing and the seniors having fun along with them is heartwarming. They are able to play. They are having fun. They are an integral part of our club. They are special people.

And this all goes back to the article you were gracious enough to write for us.
